This project was a custom new build delivered to a remote, out-of-town site — a challenging location that shaped every decision made throughout the design and construction process. The building form was kept simple and functional, prioritising efficiency and durability while responding to the highly exposed, high-wind conditions on site.

From a design and planning perspective, the team worked closely with the harsh environmental realities of the location. Careful structural planning addressed the wind exposure directly, while the layout was kept efficient and practical to support off-grid living. Managing the logistics of a remote site — from material deliveries to trade access — was a core part of the planning process.

On the construction side, the team successfully navigated the challenging site conditions throughout the build. The external walls were constructed at 150mm thick for improved thermal and structural performance, and a high level of care was maintained throughout to achieve a quality result.

Internally, thermally broken windows were installed to minimise heat loss, paired with R4 insulation batts to achieve strong thermal performance across the building. The result is a home designed to maintain comfortable internal conditions year-round, regardless of what the climate throws at it.

Being fully off-grid, energy efficiency was central to the entire project. The home was purpose-built for self-sufficiency, with a strong focus on reducing environmental impact and ensuring reliable performance in a remote location without any reliance on external services.

The key challenges — remote logistics, high-wind exposure, and complex site access — were all addressed through thoughtful structural design and careful coordination of materials and trades. The outcome is a durable, high-performance home that's well-suited to its harsh climate and delivers comfortable, year-round living in an exposed environment.
